Paper Flower Kissing Balls/Pomanders

I've been wanting to make something like this since last year when I saw these. I even bought most of the supplies and had them sitting in a bag in the corner of my craft room for all these months. I loved the punch they used, but somehow the thought of hand-punching all those flowers was just too overwhelming for me and I kept putting it off. Then in the fall I got the Cricut Art Philosophy cartridge and for Christmas I got a Cricut Expression and I really had no excuse anymore.
I used Flower8 from page 50 of the Cricut Art Philosophy booklet. They kind of remind me of Dogwood flowers and the petals have a heart shape to them, perfect for Valentine's Day. I cut the flowers at 1 1/4". The Blush and White Daisy balls are 4" styrofoam balls and the Tulip one is 5". I actually like the 5" ball better on my candlesticks, something to keep in mind before starting. I stacked two flowers on top of each other and rotated them to help cover the styrofoam ball better. I curled up the edges of the petals and pinned them in with pearl-tipped pins. It took about 100 flowers for the 4" balls and 150 flowers for the 5" ball. This worked out to about two sheets of paper for each of the smaller balls and 3 sheets for the larger ball. I happened to have paint on hand that was close to my paper colors so I painted the pink and red balls before starting to keep the white styrofoam from showing through. Spray paint would be faster and easier, but craft paint works too.
This was a great project because it didn't require much skill and was something I could sit and work on in bits and pieces while I watched TV or watched my kids playing. It's not difficult, it just takes a little time.
As I was making them I thought of a lot of variations you could try.
-I've seen something similar with the rolled flowers. Those require more time and effort, but if you have the time go for it, they're beautiful.
-You could ink the edges, once again not difficult, just requires time (and patience).
-You could cut the back flower 1/4" larger to help cover the styrofoam better.
-You could cut three flowers per pin in 1/4" increments to make them more full.
-You could use different flower shapes on each ball.
-You could use lager flowers on the larger balls (less cutting, stacking, curling and pinning).
-Other good colors would be: Baby Pink, Cranberry, Holiday Red, Hollyhock, Colonial White, whatever colors you like
-If you don't have a cutter or a punch or you don't want to cut out all of those little pieces you could probably use some pre-cut paper flowers like these
-There's something similar on page 64 of the Spring/Summer 2012 Idea Book and it looks like they used brads for the centers
I'm pretty happy with how they turned out and I may be using some or all of these again for my Easter mantle and the red one for Christmas. Happy Crafting!

For the past couple of years I've handmade our Christmas Cards. Even though it can get a little bit stressful and hectic I really enjoy doing it. But I was only making about 50 and our list of recipients kept growing. The thought of possibly making 75 or 100 cards was overwhelming to me. And I didn't get started on them early enough. I really wanted to spend December relaxing with my family and enjoying the holiday season so I needed to find an easier way to do Christmas cards, but I still wanted to "make" them myself. I had seen some Halloween cards someone had made using Studio J and was very inspired by the idea so I decided to give it a try with our Christmas cards.
I started with the family photos we had taken. I decided how many I wanted for our "card" and picked a layout that worked. I could've just designed the first page and left the second page alone if I didn't want it, but I decided that as long as I was at it I might as well make a layout. When I was done with my layout I purchased the JPEG. I downloaded the JPEG to my computer when it was ready. Then I converted the JPEG into a 5x7 format using Photoshop Elements. There is possibly another way to do this, but it was the best way that I could come up with. I uploaded the 5x7 JPEG to a photo printing website and ordered 75 copies. When I got them I just had to trim a 2" piece of white off the side and voila I had "handmade" Christmas cards. I stuck them in an envelope with a letter and sent them off.
The original idea was to print them as a 4x6 and adhere them to a card and add some stamped images or embellishments so it would be more of a hybrid card. And maybe I'll do that next year now that I know what I'm doing. There was a bit of a learning curve here so if you want to try this (I highly recommend it) go ahead, but be sure to start early.

A couple of things I learned from doing this.
-Pick a layout with large photo wells so your photos won't be microscopic when you print it smaller.
-Make sure your text is large. When you print the layout as a 4x4 or 5x5 that font is going to be very small.
-Don't put anything important too close to the edges. While CTMH does an excellent job with the printed layouts from Studio J the place we sent our JPEG to be printed cut off the Holiday Red "inking" around the edges so they didn't look quite as polished to me.

This is the card I made for my fall open house. I used the Dreamin' paper packet, which is one of my favorites. I cut the card, the circles and the leaf using the Cricut Art Philosophy cartridge which made it so easy to prep a bunch of cards at one time.

My son wanted to be a superhero for Halloween. He already had a cute cape that his aunt had made for him so I just had to figure out the rest of the costume. I thought it would be easiest to just have us all wear black (we were all super heroes together). I felt like we needed a symbol or something on our shirts so I went with "A" for "Attebury". I was really scrambling at the last minute to get these done, but it was totally worth it. They definitely made the outfit.
I cut the "A"'s out of black vinyl and cut the stars out of white vinyl. Then I stuck the "A" to the star and the star to the shirt. They were starting to peel off by the end of our first night of wearing them and I think I might have had to re-cut one of them (we wore them to a couple of events), but they held up pretty well for the most part. I could have used iron-on material, but I didn't want it to be permanent. I wanted them to be able to use the clothes again. The vinyl was a good solution. They varied in size depending on the size of the person, but I think the biggest star was about 5" and the biggest "A" was about 2 1/4". Both the "A" and the star are from the Cricut Art Philosophy cartridge.

Sometimes I get so busy with crafting and life that I forget to photograph my projects and post about them, but here are some of the things I've done over the last few months.

An announcement for some church activities

A fry box with a tag and a flower all from the Cricut Art Philosophy cartridge. I put a gift card in it and some tissue paper and gave it as a wedding present.

A "bouquet" I made for a baby shower. (I made some invitations too, but failed to photograph them. :( Sigh.) The black scalloped circles are from the Cricut Art Philosophy cartridge.

My son's birthday invitation (it was a Chargers-themed party)

My son's 4-year-old hand print on a canvas. I plan to do one every year. I did one for my daughter's first birthday too and will post a photo soon.

Now that we've been in our house over a year I'm finally getting around to putting some things up on the wall. These are on the wall right as I walk in the door from the garage and they make me happy every time I see them.

I made the Menu board and the Notes board a couple weeks ago and the Family Home Evening board a couple years ago, but I thought they all went nicely together.

Close To My Heart's B&T Duo Papers are now cardstock-weight...

...and feature a different design on the front and the back! The new B&T Duos^® papers are heavier and thicker. Since they are now cardstock-weight and will support a fully embellished layout, they can be used as bases for layouts. We have removed the copyright symbol from the printed papers and have placed it on a removable 1/2"-wide zip strip along the top. The reverse side of this zip strip is printed with decorative borders or sentiments and can be used as a border or other element to complement your artwork. The designed zip strips are also incorporated into artwork in our Workshops on the Go™ projects. Our new B&T Duos papers have a distinct design on each side of the paper instead of a monochromatic version of the design. They still have the same white core that makes them perfect for tearing, sanding, and distressing.

Beginning with the Autumn/Winter 2012 Idea Book, My Reflections^® Level 2 paper packets are also offered at a lower price of $9.95. And the cardstock included with the paper packet coordinates with the kit colors, rather than neutrals.

Traditionally, each My Reflections paper packet has been accompanied by a set of coordinating My Stickease images. I haven't had much time for crafting over the last year or so with moving twice, a new baby and a new house, but I'm finally getting back into the crafting groove and I'm starting by finishing up some projects I already started.
